  • Flight attendants at Hawaiian OK pact for narrow-body aircraft
Flight attendants at Hawaiian Airlines have ratified a contract for single-aisle aircraft for flights to the U.S. West Coast. "Everyone at Hawaiian wants us to keep our position as the market leader in service quality, cost efficiency and choice of destinations and ordering the A321neo will secure this legacy on routes between the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii beyond the middle of this decade," said Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, in a statement. • A4A's Calio: Commercial aviation is one of most regulated of deregulated industries
Nicholas Calio, the president and CEO of Airlines for America, says the government should relax the tax and regulatory burden on U.S. airlines. "Quite simply, commercial aviation, while supposedly deregulated, is now among the most highly regulated industries in America," Calio said. He pointed to 17 federal taxes and fees levied on commercial airlines as an example of excessive regulation, further noting the airlines "need a rationalized, more normalized business environment" to prosper in the long term. • Airline tickets cost half as much in 2011 as in 1978
The cost of an airline ticket in 2011 was 50% less than in 1978, when adjusted for inflation, this feature says. The drop in price stems from deregulation of the industry, experts say. "When you have intense competition for a product that is price sensitive, you have falling prices," said John Heimlich, vice president and chief economist at Airlines for America. • Boeing 787 proposal includes 3 layers of protection
A comprehensive Boeing proposal to return 787s to flight will require extensive testing, Federal Aviation Administration chief Michael Huerta says. "Once we approve a plan, then we have to go through the process of actually implementing the plan, which would involve a great deal of testing, a great deal of further analysis and re- engineering before those planes will be flying again," he said. Boeing's chief of commercial airplanes said the proposal includes three layers of protection for the lithium-ion batteries. Bloomberg Businessweek (2/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Atlanta, Chicago airports could close runways due to sequester
The two busiest airports in the U.S., Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International and Chicago's O'Hare International, are preparing for the potential effects that sequestration may bring, including possible runway closures. Sean Kennedy of Airlines for America said about sequestration, "Our focus remains in telling Congress, telling the administration that an industry that is moving 2 million passengers a day and 50,000 tons of cargo should not be treated like a political football," Kennedy said.
