  • Will the new Intel CEO close a foundry deal with Apple?
Apple could shift its chip-making contracts to another company, possibly Intel, Noel Randewich and Nadia Damouni write in this analysis. With the choice of CEO Paul Otellini's successor close at hand, an Apple-Intel foundry deal might be a signal achievement for the new CEO, they note. Alex Gauna of JMP Securities said, "The new CEO will have a very large opportunity to take this to the next level. Those discussions about taking on Apple as a foundry customer are going to be very complex and very contentious." Apple and Intel declined to comment. • Why the IT skills shortage may really be about compensation
Some IT industry watchers claim there is a critical talent shortage, while others feel it's more of a pay/wage issue and that companies advocating for more immigrant visas and green cards to acquire needed skills just want to pay less compensation. Peter Cappelli, professor of management and director of the Center for Human Resources at the Wharton School, said the talent crunch is more an affordability issue than an actual shortage of skilled IT workers. • Pitfalls continue to hamper Senate cybersecurity effort
Members of the Senate commerce and homeland security committees took up the issue of cybersecurity in a special session Thursday, where administration witnesses -- including Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano -- pressed for legislative action, but the tone of the discussion revealed that little has changed in the partisan climate that hampered two similar efforts last year. Democrats, led by Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, continue to favor rules requiring private firms to disclose information about breaches, while Republicans remain concerned about the burden additional restrictions would place on the private sector.
