  • Study links aspirin with lower melanoma risk
Postmenopausal women who take aspirin regularly might have a lower risk of melanoma, researchers analyzing data from the Women's Health Initiative report in the journal Cancer. The protective effect appeared to grow stronger with increased duration, and a similar association was not seen with other NSAIDs. The findings were consistent with studies of aspirin and other cancers, including colorectal malignancies, dermatologist Jean Tang and fellow researchers said. • Palomar prepares to launch DIY prescription laser
Palomar is awaiting FDA approval of a non-ablative fractional laser that will be set and dispensed by doctors. The LaserScript is stronger than other retail lasers but less potent than dermatologists' lasers. The device improved sun-damaged skin in a clinical trial, and patients said they liked being involved in their own treatment, says trial leader Dr. Robert Weiss, an associate professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University Medical School. • Dermatologist explains idea behind "vampire facials"
Online video shows Kim Kardashian receiving a so-called vampire facial, which involves separating the patient's blood and injecting platelets and stem cells into the face. "In theory, growth factors will thicken the skin's outer dermis, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and provide some rejuvenation, but all of these cells in the skin are already bathed in blood and perfused with these growth factors," said Brigham and Women's Hospital dermatologist Joseph Merola.
