- AMD processors support new features, boost power handling
Advanced Micro Devices is debuting new A-series laptop chips, called "Richland," that it says support video mirroring and gesture-recognition features and offer a 20% to 40% performance improvement over its "Trinity" chips. - Startup backed by Cisco debuts router for SDN
Compass-EOS has introduced the r10004 modular router, which is aimed at implementing software-defined networking technology in telecom and service provider networks. The r10004 is based on the startup's icPhotonics optical semiconductor technology. Compass-EOS has raised $120 million in private funding from Cisco Systems, Comcast Ventures and other investors. - SMBs favor VARs for high-end networking equipment
Data show sales of IT equipment will remain relatively sluggish this year, but value-added resellers can expect to capture a larger share of the high-end networking and communications market, according to Stephen Baker, an analyst with NPD Group. "You see more advanced products selling through solution provider channels, who are much stronger with communications and storage hardware vs. the CDWs of the world, who are still very focused on the PC," Baker said. - Many companies keeping telecommuting despite Yahoo's step back
Yahoo and Best Buy's recent decisions to end their telecommuting practices are not indicative of a larger business shift away from remote work, according to analysts, who say companies plan to continue to promote flexible, offsite work arrangements. A poll by Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that while less than 10% of responding companies offer all employees the option of working from home, 80% have some remote work arrangement, and the vast majority plan to keep that benefit in place. - Analysis: Talent shortage hinders health IT deployments
Health IT deployments are being hindered by a shortage of tech skills, a PricewaterhouseCoopers report says. The analysis cites a survey that indicated 67% of health IT leaders said they lack staff, and 59% say the staffing issue is a challenge in meeting federal requirements for electronic health records. "It's also a shortage of people with the skills to marry technological savvy with business strategy as health care becomes more connected, coordinated and accountable," PwC's Daniel Garrett says. It reveals that many health care providers are on the cusp of greatly expanding their use of smart mobile devices from routine business activities, such as e-mail and scheduling to care-specific uses.
