Male toddlers and youths from low-income families are lagging behind their female and more-affluent peers in language development, according to a study by professor Elaine Reese from Otago University. The study included children in New Zealand speaking te reo Maori and English and found about 87% of 2-year-olds were forming simple sentences in at least one of the languages.
