Lumber resolution proposed by bipartisan U.S. senators
The 10 senators urged the White House to talk with Canada about the potential for open softwood trade between the two nations. Snowmobilers could be nabbed from above in national forests
The National Forest Service is patrolling its lands from land and from the air, using spotters in planes to nab snowmobiles in off-limits areas. Today's machines are lighter and can operate in more dangerous areas, but those forays can cause avalanches or cost local and government-supported patrols money in rescue fees.   NYTimes.com/Associated Press (3/17)

Expensive war bad for future
Some estimates for the costs of the war and rebuilding Iraq have run as high as $3 trillion. The impact could be compounded by the recent trend of falling private foreign investment in the U.S., and some foreign governments that are shifting reserve currency holdings from dollars to euros.   Newsweek (3/24)

Analysts: Iraq situation could send economy into recession
The sluggish job market, stock market worries and low consumer confidence are all factors in analysts' concerns. A war with Iraq would not be a cure-all, though a quick conflict would probably give the markets a short-term rally.   MSNBC (3/14)

WTO: Bush's go-it-alone policy threatens global trade
The World Trade Organization says American decisions within the organization and toward a war with Iraq could erode respect for international trade rules. The war could likely slow down trade, increase oil prices and raise transportation and insurance costs, says WTO director general Supachai Panitchpakdi.   NYTimes.com (3/17)

International
WTO: Canada's trade policies improve, but are still lacking
The World Trade Organization says the country's policies are liberal, but could be better in areas such as agriculture and steel. The WTO review says the Canadian economy has remained strong despite the economic slowdown in the U.S. since 2000.   The Globe and Mail (Toronto) (3/17)

AF&PA News
Stop the double taxation of corporate dividends and keep us on the job
The paper and forest products industry pays the second highest effective tax rate in the world. The double taxation of corporate income is a major reason and it makes us less competitive in the global marketplace and costs jobs. Send your elected officials a letter asking them to stop the double taxation on dividends by supporting the President's economic growth plan online here. For more information, contact Katy Moffett at (202) 463-2755.

EEAA Program accepting entries
Entries are now being accepted for the 30th Annual AF&PA Environmental & Energy Achievement Awards Program. The deadline for entries is April 11. Copies of the entry forms may be obtained at AF&PA's Web site. Contact: Kathy Zelaya (202) 463-2435.
