E-commerce, account maintenance functions down this weekend

All e-commerce and account maintenance functions on the AABB Web site will be down this weekend in order to perform necessary system upgrades. Beginning today at 10 p.m., the AABB marketplace, which includes the online bookstore, customer account management, e-commerce, membership directory, phone system and NBExchange, will not be available. Full access to the Web site will return by Monday, Nov. 24, at 6 a.m.

AABB is currently accepting proposals for the 2010 audioconference series. Consideration will be given to 60-minute programs with a focus on technical/clinical, scientific, recruitment/collections, quality/education, cellular therapies and leadership management. All proposals must be received by Dec. 31. Submit a proposal or contact the education department with questions. Proposals also can be faxed to (301) 951-3729.

All equipment affected by the ending of daylight saving time -- including medical devices, LIS systems, test equipment and software -- must be recalibrated to go back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 2. FDA issued a notification letter to health care practitioners in 2007 informing them that some medical devices could generate adverse events due to a change in the dates for daylight saving time that began last year as part of a congressional initiative to reduce energy consumption. HHS releases 2007 blood collection, utilization survey report

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday released the 2007 National Blood Collection and Utilization Survey Report. The survey, conducted under a contract with AABB, shows a 5.8% increase in the amount of blood collected in the U.S. from 2004 to 2006, and for the first time ever, includes data on donor participation. Analysis of the baseline information to be collected as part of the U.S. Biovigilance Network, including transfusion- and donor-related adverse reactions, also is highlighted in the report.
