Forest City Enterprises has gone from treeline to skyline. Founded in 1920 as a lumber dealer, the company now focuses on real estate development in metropolitan areas across the US. Its commercial group develops and manages more than 90 retail and office properties, half a dozen hotels, and some 20 regional malls in about 15 states. The residential group owns and manages more than 110 upscale and middle-market apartments, condominiums, and military family housing units in 20 states. The company also owns some 10,500 acres of raw land, some held for sale and some held for future development into master-planned communities. The interrelated Ratner, Miller, and Shafran families control Forest City.
