Avoiding the flood of counterfeit electronics and other parts is a growing challenge for defense contractors and distributors, said attendees at a recent industry conference in California sponsored by information and analytics provider IHS. Kirsten Koepsel, director of legal affairs and tax at the Aerospace Industries Association, says stricter federal rules that companies must adhere to in order to avoid counterfeits also are a challenge. "All someone needs to do is make the boxes of counterfeit parts look like there are shoes inside -- and you will never know that fake parts are coming in," Koepsel said. The Department of Defense is experiencing billions of dollars in excess parts, vehicles, weapons and other supplies, which will include material that soon will return from Afghanistan, experts say. There is no simple way to deal with it, they say. "There is a need to dispose of material," said Keith Lippert, a retired U.S. Navy vice admiral. "We have to free up this warehouse space, and in terms of priorities of all the things that they do at the DLA and the services ... if there are 25 things that have to be done, disposal is probably No. 26," he said, referring to the Defense Logistics Agency, of which he is a former director.
