CEA's i-stage -- A playground for all technology companies

CEA SmartBrief | Sep 03, 2008

It's no secret that cutting-edge technologies fuel our industry. Over the years, several industry players have taken a stab at creating competitions that aim to sort through these new players and find the world's next "it" gadget. And while hot technologies such as TiVo's digital video recorder have surfaced at these contests, there has been recent chatter from major outlets including The New York Times about these events morphing into "pay for play" opportunities. With some entry fees amounting to $18,500, it is hard to imagine that the "little guys" looking to break into the market have much of a chance. Read more at CEA Digital Dialogue.

A strong showing for trade at the DNC

CEA SmartBrief | Aug 28, 2008

Wednesday in Denver, trade advocates came together to speak an urgent truth: getting our economy moving requires a strong and positive trade policy. Speakers including Rep. Gregory Meeks and representatives from the Colorado governor's office and the Denver World Trade Center noted that exports were the bright spot of the economy. The message is clear: trade is not a partisan issue. One long overdue step is immediate congressional approval of the Colombian free-trade agreement. Our inaction has already cost America more than $1 billion in needless tariffs. In today's dire economic environment, we cannot afford to wait.

She knows if you've been bad or good

CEA SmartBrief | Aug 28, 2008

So be good for Molly's sake. Otherwise she'll be fishing Paula Abdul and the other i-stage judges out of their Coca-Colas. Okay, so Paula's not really a judge, but Ryan Block, Kevin Kelly and Jeff Pulver are, and it's up to Molly Wood, CNET's executive editor and now i-stage mistress of ceremonies, to make sure these three wise men find the next tech messiah in the vast desert of Las Vegas. And while we have full faith that her comic delivery and industry knowledge from The Buzz Report and Regis and Kelly may actually save the competition, we really selected her for her mastery of backwoods horse-wrangling techniques honed in Montana to keep the Silicon Valley fight clubs from causing i-stage to run over into the subsequent pool party. We hope she brings her bullhorn.

The updated standard is available from IHS.

Not only has the former editor in chief of Engadget analyzed every square foot of what CES has to offer, he has been known to obsessively chart and dissect his own blogging patterns. And, at a time when he is taking on his own new ventures, he is set to give tech's best new breed a taste of his recipe for success as the latest addition to the judging lineup for i-stage. Forget the payola conferences. Don't miss the pitch of a lifetime at the 2008 i-stage competition in Las Vegas on Oct. 20.

Victory for home recording in Cablevision's remote-DVR case

CEA SmartBrief | Aug 21, 2008

On Aug. 4, a federal appeals court ruled that Cablevision's remote DVRs -- which worked like off-site TiVos -- didn't infringe copyright. The decision, which overturns an earlier opinion of a district court, stated that there was no significant legal difference between the remote DVRs and a VCR. Read a summary of the history and findings on the Digital Freedom Campaign site.

How semiconductor and CE companies can improve cost, time-to-market and product quality

CEA SmartBrief | Aug 15, 2008

During the last few years, the demand for CE products has surpassed the demand for personal computers (PCs) as consumers around the world benefited from the technological advances in products such as televisions, wireless handsets and automotive applications. The result has been a boon for CE manufacturers as well as a new growth market for semiconductor manufacturers traditionally focused on PC or communications markets. But the increased demand is also creating tremendous pressure on these manufacturers. Specifically, the growing reliance on CE products and the need for shorter development cycles are requiring semiconductor suppliers (also known as integrated circuit, or IC, suppliers) to work more closely with CE producers to improve design processes and help bring products to market more quickly. CEA, the Global Semiconductor Alliance and KPMG partnered to examine these and other issues. Read the report.

CEA investigating 3-D video standards

CEA SmartBrief | Aug 12, 2008

There is widespread interest in 3-D video across the entire production, delivery and viewing chain. Movies are being produced and shown in 3-D in cinemas with advances in digital cinema improving the experience. To respond to this, CEA will hold a discovery group session at the Technology & Standards Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 22, in Las Vegas, to address delivery and presentation of three-dimensional (3-D) video in the home and determine the need for standards within CEA's domain. To request an opportunity to speak during the meeting, contact Brian Markwalter or Alayne Bell.

Yahoo! does the right thing

CEA SmartBrief | Aug 11, 2008

Yahoo is offering coupons to these consumers to repurchase music through its new music partner, Rhapsody. Its original announcement was another ugly reminder of the shackles DRM puts on legally purchased content, but we are happy to see Yahoo! do the right thing and make the best of an otherwise bad situation.

Proposed PERFORM Act would send consumers "Back to the Tape Age"

CEA SmartBrief | Aug 11, 2008

In a written statement submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee, CEA and the Home Recording Rights Coalition (HRRC) emphasized the importance of preserving the innovation, integrity and usefulness of the products that its members deliver to consumers, in particular those that allow them to listen to music via radio and other devices. The proposed PERFORM Act would take away the longstanding rights of consumers to enjoy the benefits and flexibility of digital technology by essentially outlawing a digital satellite radio service (and other services subject to Section 114, such as a noninteractive music service offered by a cable company) under copyright law unless it "uses reasonably available technology to prevent copying of [a] transmission, except for 'reasonable recording.'"

Now it just needs to point that light at its movie division.
