1. Palin's debate comments on DP benefits contradicted by record

Gay & Lesbian Leadership SmartBrief | Oct 07, 2008

An assertion by Republican vice-presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin during last week's debate that "no one would ever propose, not in a McCain-Palin administration, to do anything to prohibit, say, visitations in a hospital or contracts being signed" by same-sex couples reportedly contradicts her previous stance on the issue. In August 2007, Palin told Newsweek that the only reason she let stand such benefits as Alaska governor was because striking them would have violated the state's constitution. A McCain campaign spokeswoman said Palin is against "all forms of discrimination against people with different lifestyles." Newsweek (10/13)

3. How Fox misplayed gay card in blaming Fannie Mae mess on Frank

Gay & Lesbian Leadership SmartBrief | Oct 07, 2008

Blogger David Fiderer believes Fox News Channel decided to try to lay the blame for the crisis at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on out U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., after Frank reportedly corrected Fox host Bill O'Reilly, who then had an on-camera "meltdown." Fox was trying to draw attention to Frank's Fannie Mae "love connection" -- his relationship with former Fannie Mae executive Herb Moses -- and also raised the question of whether Frank had escaped blame because he's gay. However, Frank's relationship with Moses and the latter's tenure at Fannie Mae both ended in 1998, while the roots of the crisis go back to 2004, Fiderer writes. Huffington Post, The (10/06)
