Vyyo (rhymes with "bio") tries to do what a marathon runner might wish was possible: Speed up the last mile. The company provides broadband network access technology under the UltraBand brand name that is designed mainly for cable system operators, telecom services providers, and utility companies. Its network amplifier and multiplexer devices are used to speed transmission of data over hybrid-fiber coaxial cable lines and enable the computer telephony and enhanced video services that cable operators require as they broaden their horizons beyond pay television. Vyyo's key customer has been Cox Communications. The struggling public company was acquired by former CEO Davidi Gilo in late 2008 and taken private.
