Unlike residents of more developed nations, the first telephone many people in developing regions owned was a cell phone. Millicom International Cellular (MIC) primarily provides cellular phone service to more than 23 million subscribers in 16 emerging markets with limited wireline infrastructure. It markets products and services under the tigo brand in most of its service areas. The company's core market is Latin America, where it does three-quarters of its business, but it also has cellular operations and licenses in countries within Africa and Asia. Nearly all of MIC's subscribers are prepaid wireless customers.
