Pretexting a persistent threat as carriers' ramp up protection efforts
Telecoms have taken aggressive steps to snuff out pretexting, the practice by which thieves pose as customers and try to steal personal information from carriers. Lawmakers in the past year or so also have begun to take notice of the problem, and some states even passed laws against pretexting.
