One week remains for members to provide feedback on AABB Forums

Pilot launch, fundraising milestones announced for U.S. Biovigilance Network

An interorganizational task force of leaders in the transfusion and biological therapies communities, including representatives of key federal agencies and the private sector, announced today that a pilot project for the U.S. Biovigilance Network will be launched this fall after raising $1 million in private donations to fund start-up costs. This initiative -- spearheaded by AABB -- will, for the first time, give the U.S. a national system to collect and analyze data on adverse reactions and incidents relating to the collection, transfusion and transplantation of human blood and use of related biological therapies -- with the ultimate goal to enhance patient safety as well as reduce health care costs. Votes needed to help young leukemia patient receive Energizer Hall of Fame Award

A 13-year-old leukemia patient who has signed up more than 10,000 marrow donors to the National Marrow Donor Program Registry since April 2007 is a finalist in the Energizer Keep Going Hall of Fame, an award that honors those who match the enthusiasm and passion of the Energizer Bunny. Pat Pedraja, who began his "Driving for Donors" program last summer when he learned that minorities like himself make up less than a third of the registry, is now one of 10 individuals competing in a final round of voting. The deadline for individuals to submit abstracts for the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society-North America Annual Conference and Exposition has been extended to July 31. Abstracts are being accepted in three main categories -- organ engineering, stem cells and immunology. Selections from the stem cell category also will be highlighted during a cellular therapy session co-sponsored by AABB. The TERMIS-NA Annual Conference will be held Dec. 7 to 10 in San Diego. Abstracts selected for presentation at 2008 AABB Annual Meeting

Authors who submitted abstracts to be considered for presentation at the 2008 AABB Annual Meeting & TXPO, which will be held Oct. 4 to 7 in Montreal, were notified this week via e-mail if their abstract was accepted. AABB received a record 1,123 abstract submissions this year. Of that number, more than 960 were accepted. Selected abstracts were chosen for either oral presentation or poster display. Those who have not received notification can contact AABB for more information. Several oral abstract presentations as well as two different abstract poster sessions will be held during the Annual Meeting.
