Pilot program aims to reduce blood transfusion complications
The Johns Hopkins Hospital and eight other medical centers this week are set to launch a pilot study to monitor and potentially reduce the number of infections, allergic reactions, clerical errors and other blood transfusion-related complications in the U.S. Currently, 15% of U.S. hospitals have committed to eventually take part in the "biovigilance" program, making it the largest program of its kind in the world, said Barbee Whitaker, an AABB official.
