Gastrointestinal bleeding is more likely to occur with newer oral anticoagulants than with standard treatment, according to an analysis in the journal Gastroenterology. Researchers analyzed data on 151,578 patients who participated in 43 randomized, controlled studies and found that the risk was greatest for those undergoing therapy for venous thrombosis and acute coronary syndrome. "The current evidence, however, is based on a highly selected patient group with a low bleeding risk, disallowing a true reflection of future patients in daily clinical practice," researchers wrote.
