Section 1135 -- Social Security Act

AANP SmartBrief | Nov 12, 2009

The Secretary of Health and Human Services has invoked her waiver authority under Section 1135 of the Social Security Act. Plans to monitor pandemic 2009 H1N1 vaccines

AANP SmartBrief | Nov 10, 2009

The Federal Immunization Safety Task Force, a cross-department task force led by the Department of Health and Human Services, released a report detailing federal plans to monitor pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines. The primary intent of these efforts is to assure that adequate safety data are available in a timely fashion. Existing vaccine safety monitoring efforts are being expanded and new systems created to respond to the 2009 H1N1 influenza. These include: large, linked databases from health insurance plans are being matched with state immunization registries to conduct near-real-time surveillance of the health outcomes of more than 20 million people; expanded surveillance systems will enhance detection and follow-up on potential cases of Guillan-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder; and an independent group of experts is being established to conduct regular, rapid reviews of data from federal safety monitoring systems as it accumulates. The report is available here.
