CMS National Provider Calls

The CMS will host a series of national provider calls that will provide an overview of ICD-10 and how it differs from ICD-9-CM. The presentations will include the major impacts providers should consider when planning to update any systems with ICD-10 codes. For the provider, payer, vendor, and publishing community, this overview will help them think about future reporting, system updates, and training, considering that ICD-10 may be implemented in the future. Get Smart About Antibiotics Week

The CDC's Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign has been addressing antibiotic resistance in the community since the late 1990s. To emphasize the threat of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic use, the CDC has designated Oct. 6 to 10 as Get Smart about Antibiotics Week. Nominations for 2009 AANP elections open Oct. 13

It is time to start thinking about running for an AANP elected office. The 2009 Call for Nominations opens on Monday, Oct. 13. AANP board of directors' positions up for election are president-elect, treasurer, and regional directors for Regions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. State representative positions open are Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York (N), New York (S), N. Carolina, N. Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, S. Carolina, S. Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. There will be three open positions for the Nominations Committee. Information will be published on Oct. 13 in SmartBrief, on the AANP Web site and via e-mail to members eligible to vote in the election.

FDA announcement

The FDA announced that companies marketing unapproved ophthalmic balanced salt solutions and unapproved topical drug products containing papain must stop manufacturing and marketing these products or risk enforcement action. FDA is taking these actions because it has received reports of serious adverse events associated with their uses. Today's action does not affect approved ophthalmic BSS products. Medicare Part B monthly premium

The standard Medicare Part B monthly premium will be $96.40 in 2009, the same as the Part B premium for 2008. This is the first year since 2000 that there was no increase in the standard premium over the prior year. Normally, the Part B premium increases at the same rate as average Part B expenditures from year to year. A number of factors explain why the premium can be kept level for 2009. New incentives for e-prescribing

Advisory on infant formula

The FDA has issued a Health Information Advisory in response to report of contaminated milk-based infant formula manufactured in China. Although no Chinese manufacturers of infant formula have fulfilled the requirements to sell infant formula in the U.S., FDA officials are investigating whether or not infant formula manufactured in China is being sold in specialty markets serving the Asian community. The FDA has received information from companies who manufacture infant formula for the American market that they are not importing infant formula or source materials from China. The FDA is asking state officials to work with them to assist with the removal of any Chinese infant formula found on store shelves and to warn members of the Asian community to avoid using Chinese manufactured infant formula.
