Boehringer drugs fail to prevent stroke recurrence in study
Micardis, a hypertension medicine from Boehringer Ingelheim Corp., failed to outperform placebo in protecting patients from stroke recurrence or reducing the risk of diabetes in a company-funded study. The clinical trial, which involved 20,332 participants, also showed that combining Boehringer's blood thinner Aggrenox with aspirin was no better than Plavix -- a rival drug from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Sanofi-Aventis -- in preventing repeat strokes.
