Embracing mental health care: Lessons learned for success

Entries being accepted for the 2012 AAP Art Contest

The 2012 AAP Children's Art Contest is now open. The theme is "A Healthy Start to Your Day." In the U.S., the contest is open to boys and girls in three groups, grades 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12. Group winners and their parents/guardians will be invited to a presentation ceremony at the 2012 AAP National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Entries also are welcome from children from other countries. For the single international award, the contest is open to children ages 13 to 18.
Rules, official entry forms and consent forms must accompany all entries and are available online at the AAP website. Entries must be postmarked by July 16.
Safety alert on detergent packets

Poison control centers have reported an increase in serious poisonings caused by concentrated, single-use laundry detergent packets. Pediatricians should advise parents to keep these out of children's reach, and call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 if a child ingests concentrated detergent. Learn more.
New mental health promotional ads for your practice

The AAP has developed two ads to promote mental health as part of health supervision visits. The ads, included in the June issue of AAP News, can be posted on a bulletin board or used as a table top display. The AAP is also publishing the ads in popular parent magazines and using them for social marketing activities. Parents can be directed to the “Emotional Wellness” section of healthychildren.org for tips on how to encourage social-emotional health. Pediatricians can find tools and resources to enhance mental health care by visiting the AAP website.

Sanofi Pasteur’s Pentacel (DTaP-IPV/Hib) and Daptacel (DTaP) are expected to be in short supply throughout the summer of 2012. Providers should continue to follow the recommended immunization schedule and ensure that patients receive all recommended doses of DTaP, Hib and polio vaccines. The CDC issued guidance on what to consider when changing vaccine products and sample schedules for using DTaP, Hib and IPV vaccines when vaccinating children during the drug shortage.

AAP clarifies counseling for immunization administration with regional carrier

The AAP sent a letter to Physicians Plus clarifying the counseling component of immunization administration in response to concerns by members of the Wisconsin Chapter. Although Physicians Plus, a regional carrier in Wisconsin, will pay for immunization administration CPT codes 90460 and 90461, the carrier requires documentation to support the vaccine counseling. As the AAP continues to address this issue, AAP members are urged to report any similar issues with other carriers in other states by using the AAP Hassle Factor Form.

The AAP and the Allstate Foundation have joined forces to reduce teen driving deaths. Eight AAP chapters have been awarded grants to develop novel approaches to improving teen driving safety and strengthening graduated driver licensing laws. The AAP released its first policy statement recommending GDL programs in 1996. After years of hard work by pediatric advocates, today every state has some form of GDL law, but the strength of these laws varies widely by state.
