Researchers measure lead in Indian spices
After several reports of lead poisoning in Indian children in Massachusetts, researchers found that about 25% of spices, powders and food products from Indian specialty stores in the Boston area contained more than 1 microgram of lead for each gram of the product. While it is below the 2 to 3 mcg/g standard set by the EU, the study in Pediatrics warned that repeated exposure to the metal may cause lead poisoning in children.
