Dose of epilepsy drug in pregnancy correlates with birth defect risk Researchers reported in The Lancet Neurology that increased doses of carbamazepine, lamotrigine, valproic acid and phenobarbital are all tied to a higher rate of birth defects, adding that dose selection is as important as type of drug. Data on about 4,000 pregnancies found the highest birth defect risk with intake of the highest doses of valproic acid and phenobarbital and the smallest risk with the lowest doses of lamotrigine and carbamazepine.
