Class I's among top employers of military veterans
More than one quarter of the workforce at U.S. railroads is made up of military veterans. In part, that's because "[m]ilitary folks adapt well to the railroad environment" because they're used to working 24/7, said Roy Schroer, Union Pacific's vice president of human resources. And, as John Wesley III, BNSF's military hiring manager, points out, "For the most part, if the military has it, so does the railroad." In addition, the railroads take care of their vets. For instance, when the husband of a Union Pacific worker was deployed, UP kept up his health and life insurance for the family and paid the difference between his UP wage and what he earned with the National Guard.
