Company: Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea Incorporated
Industry: Coffee & Tea

Intelligentsia is pretty smart when it comes to brewed beverages. The importer, roaster, and wholesaler delivers 1.25 million pounds of roasted coffee beans each year to 700 customers including restaurants like fellow Chicagoan Charlie Trotter's and Keens Steakhouse (in New York) as well as coffee houses in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Los Angeles, Boston, and Vancouver. It also has two cafes of its own, roasts the private label beans sold at Crate & Barrel and Frontera Foods, and sells 25 flavors of tea. Intelligentsia buys from socially and environmentally responsible growers in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. Husband and wife co-owners Doug Zell (CEO) and Emily Mange founded the company in 1995.
