Alaska city will spruce up Tanana River levee to meet new standards
Fairbanks, Alaska, plans to spend $1.5 million to update the Tanana River levee to comply with federal requirements implemented after Hurricane Katrina. The Federal Emergency Management Agency could label the levee as flood-prone if the city does not comply, which would drive up insurance costs. Crews are patching holes and clearing debris from the 21-mile levee system separating Fairbanks from the river.
