U.S.-based eye center to test artificial retina in India

Doheny Eye Institute has teamed up with a specialty eye hospital in Bangalore, India, to conduct Phase II trials of an artificial retina by the end of 2009. Called Bionic Vision, the device is designed to help restore sight in patients who have night- and age-related blindness. Doheny hopes to cut the cost of the device to about $10,000 once it enters the market.
