"Lady Bird" to dig tunnel for D.C.'s Clean Rivers Project
D.C. Water, the District of Columbia's water and sewer authority, has christened a 1,300-ton, 400-foot-long, German tunnel-boring machine "Lady Bird." The machine will be used to carve a four-mile tunnel beneath the Potomac River to store stormwater runoff from the sewer system. The project is part of the the Clean Rivers Project. Three other tunnels are also planned.
