States see sharp drop in construction activity
New construction activity has declined sharply in several parts of the U.S., according to a recent report. New contracts issued on future construction in the Austin, Texas, area dropped 48% in the first eight months of 2009, for example. The number of new commercial construction contracts in August in Alabama fell 95% from year-ago levels. Meanwhile, local construction in the Kansas City area was down 35% for the year through August.
