Nano particles extend lifespan of concrete
Bridges and roads made with concrete in the 1940s and 1950s are in rough shape, according to a report from an industry group. In part, the problem stems from use of road salt that over time creates micropores and cracks. Engineers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have created the VERDiCT (Viscosity Enhancers Reducing Diffusion in Concrete Technology) technique, which may double the lifespan of concrete. In VERDiCT, a nano-sized additive is mixed in to cement, which slows road salt infiltration.
