Workers authorize strike against downtown Chicago Starwood hotels

Hotel workers in Chicago voted on Wednesday to authorize a strike at five downtown hotels belonging to the Starwood chain, and similar votes could affect downtown Hyatt and Hilton hotels. A contract for 6,000 workers at 31 hotels expired on Aug. 31, and a spokesman for the Unite Here Local 1 union said Starwood was targeted for the first vote because it was vocal in blaming the economy for cutbacks. A spokesman for Starwood said hotels have indeed been hurt by the recession.
