50 years of America in Space time line

Visit AIA's Web site at www.aia-aerospace.org to see the 50 Years of America in Space flight time line. Featuring 50 milestones in U.S. space history, the time line includes accomplishments of NASA, the Defense Department and national security agencies, commercial ventures, treaties and an array of space facts. Pictures include the Gemini 7 and Gemini 6A spacecraft, which demonstrated people could withstand weightlessness for the duration of a trip to the moon as well as the first ever space rendezvous. The site also includes AIA white papers and links to other space-related Web sites.
SMC hosts TRIAD session for small business sectors

Acquisition processes affecting small business were among the hot topics at the AIA-sponsored fall 2008 meeting of the Tri-Association Advisory Panel for Small Business (TRIAD) in Washington. AIA, the National Defense Industrial Association and the Electronic Industries Alliance formed TRIAD more than 20 years ago to advocate for small businesses, women-owned small businesses and veteran-owned businesses. Report of the 2008 member needs assessment

AIA conducted a survey over the summer to better assess the association's benefits and services. Eighty-two percent of all respondents are very satisfied or satisfied with AIA's performance. While greater alignment between goals and expectations will improve overall member satisfaction, the ability to effect change in the industry was the most important activity for council and committee representatives. Based on findings from the survey, AIA staff will be working with their councils and committees to develop specific recommendations for improving the association's efforts. AIA trains industry on Europe's REACH

AIA's Environment, Safety and Health Committee recently conducted three training workshops on REACH, the European Union's Registration, Evaluation and Authorization initiative intended to regulate chemical use and products in EU markets. Responding to the work force challenge

Alarmed over the critical need to develop the next generation of workers for America's aerospace industry, AIA's member companies have committed to an agenda to strengthen the work force of the future in a new report titled "Launch into Aerospace." The report identifies the goals and actions industry will take to address the work force challenge. AIA is developing a second work force report that will take a closer look at the issue and detail industry's actions and recommendations. Read the report.
Heijl named first ICCAIA rep to ICAO

International aviation specialist Marinus Heijl has joined the International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations as that organization's first full-time representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal. AIA President and CEO Marion Blakey, current council chair, said Heijl, who retired from ICAO last December after a 27-year career on staff there, will provide a much-needed voice for aircraft manufacturers. ICCAIA represents aerospace manufacturing associations in Canada, Europe, Brazil, Japan and the United States and has observer status at ICAO. Read more.

Modernization delays will affect new administration's budget planning

The next president will face tough defense policy choices because military modernization has been chronically delayed, according to a recently released AIA Report. The report cautions that between 2010 and 2019, the United States must change course or risk falling behind other global powers. "Defense Modernization: Today's Choices for Tomorrow's Readiness" provides specific recommendations and details the cost of failure for nine weapon-system sectors in addition to logistics and science and technology activities. The report details the policy choices outlined in an earlier paper, "U.S. Defense Modernization: Readiness Now and for the Future." Both papers are being provided to the presidential candidates and their staff. Read more.
