Economic and technical factors are causing companies to develop bio-based, higher margin chemicals in place of biofuels. "It's not the sophisticated chemicals that will be a problem [in a post-petroleum era]. We will find a way of making all the sophisticated chemicals that we want, as we do now. We really need to think about the low-cost, high-volume, high-mass materials," said Tom Welton of Imperial College in London.
