Maine hybrid bridge is a model for fiber-reinforced plastics

A 34-foot-long bridge in Pittsfield, Maine, is a hybrid design that could lead to wider use of fiber-reinforced plastics. The structure has 23 arches made of carbon- and glass-fiber fabric that have been inflated, shaped, stiffened and then filled with concrete to form the composite structure that holds the load of a two-lane highway.
