Study supports lumpectomy plus radiation in early breast cancer
Women with stage I or II breast cancer who underwent lumpectomy with radiation had a greater chance of surviving than those treated with mastectomy, an analysis of 112,154 cases found. A greater rate of death due to heart disease and other illnesses may indicate the mastectomy group was in poorer health, but a researcher said the findings should reassure women who choose lumpectomy. The study will be reported in the journal Cancer.
