Caregivers struggle with challenges of veterans' care
Thousands of caregivers of military veterans suffering from conditions such as PTSD and traumatic brain injury have reached out to the Department of Veterans Affairs for assistance. The VA recognizes that many caregivers, who have little or no medical training themselves, are at risk of developing Secondary PTSD as they struggle to cope with loved ones' illnesses. "Although they didn't experience that initial trauma that injured the veteran, they are experiencing that trauma through being exposed to what the veteran has endured," says the VA's Deborah Amdur.
