Surgical mistakes remain common, study finds
At least 4,000 surgical errors known as "never events" occur in the U.S. annually, Johns Hopkins University researchers reported in the journal Surgery. Foreign objects are left inside patients about 39 times a week, while the wrong procedure is conducted or the wrong body part is operated on about 20 times per week, researchers estimated.
