Study: High-tech scans often not needed for ED diagnosis

Israeli researchers who studied patients in a teaching hospital emergency department found high-tech diagnostics such as CT scans add costs even though physicians say they help make a diagnosis only about one-third of the time. "Basic clinical skills remain a powerful tool, sufficient for achieving an accurate diagnosis in most cases," the study team wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
