Researchers: Tiotropium inhaler may raise mortality risk

People who used a Spiriva Respimat inhaler to ease breathing problems linked to lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema were 52% more likely to die compared with a placebo group, a 6,500-participant study published in the British Medical Journal found. Researchers estimated that there would be one additional death per 124 patients who used the device, possibly because it is delivering a greater concentration of the drug, known generically as tiotropium, than intended.
