CDC experts report surge in deaths from MRSA
A new CDC report estimates that more Americans died from infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria than from HIV/AIDS in 2005, a finding that Los Angeles epidemiologist Dr. Elizabeth Bancroft called "astounding." Nearly 19,000 patients died of the drug-resistant infection, and a majority of the infections were linked to health care treatment. "We hope that there are more pressure and more incentives to develop more and more useful antibiotics for all generations," Bancroft added.
