Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has agreed to pay a $6.8 million settlement for claims of damages to natural resources allegedly caused by its Morenci mine in Arizona. The complaints were made by the state and the U.S. Justice Department, which said surface water, wildlife and habitats were harmed or lost because of the release of hazardous materials such as sulfuric acid and metals from the site.
