Federal government to revise model to determine students' socioeconomic status
The U.S. Department of Education is seeking to establish a fuller picture of students' lives, in part, by collecting additional data on their home lives and using that information to more accurately determine their socioeconomic status. Under the plan, released by the National Center on Education Statistics, more students could be classified as low income. Currently, this measure is determined primarily by self-reported data and enrollment in free and reduced-price meal programs.
