3-day and 10-day regimens similar for staph-infected abscesses

A three-day trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole regimen works about as well as a 10-day regimen after surgical drainage and irrigation of skin abscesses presumed to be infected with Staphylococcus aureus, according to researchers at State University of New York at Buffalo. Recurrence rates one, three and six months after treatment were 19%, 36% and 49%, respectively, in the three-day group and 10%, 28% and 48%, respectively, in the 10-day group.
