American announces major maintenance reshuffling

American Airlines confirmed on Wednesday that it would close its overhaul base in Kansas City, while scaling back its San Francisco base to Class II status. Meanwhile, Class II operations in three other cities also will be closed. About 700 workers are expected to lose their jobs. American said the moves were needed because of "reduced flying and a fleet that has shrunk from a high of more than 900 planes to approximately 600 today.
