United announces policy change in credit card processing expenses

In a cost-cutting move, United Airlines has told some travel agencies they will now be expected to pay credit card processing fees on the tickets they book, a cost formerly borne by the airlines. The fees levied by Visa, American Express and others average 2% of the charge amount, and that can add up: United estimates that distribution costs, including credit card fees, have reached $710 million. "We're continuing to explore ways in the current economic environment to reduce our costs and run an efficient airline," says United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski. Travel agents worry that other carriers will match United's new policy, and the agents' major trade association has asked the Department of Justice to guard against possible collusion.
