Mass. city boosts reliance on wind power
The city of Gloucester, Mass., and partner Gloucester Engineering have flipped the switch on the latest of three wind turbines, making Gloucester the only city in the state to generate the equivalent of its municipal electricity load from wind power. "It's a statement about choosing our own destiny and becoming independent from oil," said Mayor Carolyn Kirk. Under a deal signed by Gloucester with Equity Industrial Partners, two of the turbines will deliver power at a below-market rate, saving the city nearly $500,000 annually for the next 25 years.
