Stem cells from fat tissue could lead to biological pacemaker

Half of the mice that received injections of "beating" cells developed from stem cells derived from brown fat tissue demonstrated a complete or partial reversal of atrioventricular block, an electrical signaling condition that causes reduced heart rates, Japanese researchers found. They hope to develop a biological pacemaker that could operate as an anti-arrhythmic therapy while addressing problems linked to electronic pacemakers, such as malfunction risk and need for repeated replacements of the device's parts, the study's lead author said.
