Tech choices: Camera phone or digital camera?

CEA SmartBrief | Nov 19, 2009

Cell phones are slowly but surely invading the turf long dominated by digital cameras and camcorders -- capturing photos and video. To be fair, it's not the cell phone's fault that more and more consumers are using their handsets to snap images. In fact, according to leading Internet photo-sharing site Flickr, the iPhone is neck-and-neck with the Canon Digital Rebel XTi as the most popular camera of users on the site. But what exactly is it that appeals to those who shoot photos or video with their phone? Visit DigitalTips.org for more.

Connector Color Standards

CEA SmartBrief | Nov 17, 2009

It is no accident that left and right audio connectors are consistently color-coded white and red, respectively. In fact, there are 14 colors identified for 12.2-channel audio-speaker connections in CEA's standard for Connection Color Codes for Home Theater Systems (CEA-863-A). This standard and the related F-Connector Color Coding for Home Television Systems (CEA-897) are being reviewed by the joint CEA/CEDIA R10 Residential Systems Committee. The work will ensure that CEA-863 is aligned with Home Theater Recommended Practice: Audio Design (CEA/CEDIA-CEB22), recently created by the Residential Systems Committee. The committee also plans to reaffirm Standard Method of Measurement for Digital Versatile Disc -- Video Players (CEA-896-A), a standard that defines measurement methods and the form of disclosure for performance characteristics of consumer DVD players. For more information or to join this work effort, please contact standards@CE.org.

Chinese Ministry imposes tariff on American-made Nylon 6

CEA SmartBrief | Nov 12, 2009

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has issued a preliminary ruling that imposed a 3% tariff on American-made Nylon 6, a synthetic filament that ends up in a wide array of products, including toothbrushes, auto parts and socks. The Chinese ministry said it would begin collecting the tariff immediately, though the money would be kept as a deposit and returned should the decision be reversed. The ruling was the latest in a series of punitive measures that started last month, when the U.S. imposed a 35% tariff on Chinese-made tires. CEA is exploring whether this will affect members' companies. We ask any company that believes it may be affected to contact us with the HTS code number of the products they are exporting that may be affected.

Tell the FCC to say "No" to the cable kill switch

CEA SmartBrief | Nov 05, 2009

The battle over your home-entertainment equipment is heating up again. Hollywood wants the Federal Communications Commission to grant the studios permission to engage in Selectable Output Control (SOC), a technology mandate to allow movie studios to shut off video outputs on the back of your cable box and DVR during the screening of certain movies over cable. Why is this bad? Because SOC could inhibit future innovation, obstruct interoperability, limit fair use and restrict consumer choice. It also could force you to buy all new home-entertainment gear to watch Hollywood films over cable. To learn more, watch these videos.
