Tell the FCC to say "No" to the cable kill switch
CEA SmartBrief | Nov 05, 2009
The battle over your home-entertainment equipment is heating up again. Hollywood wants the Federal Communications Commission to grant the studios permission to engage in Selectable Output Control (SOC), a technology mandate to allow movie studios to shut off video outputs on the back of your cable box and DVR during the screening of certain movies over cable. Why is this bad? Because SOC could inhibit future innovation, obstruct interoperability, limit fair use and restrict consumer choice. It also could force you to buy all new home-entertainment gear to watch Hollywood films over cable. To learn more, watch these videos.

Short and sweet is the secret to the sell at second annual i-stage
CEA SmartBrief | Oct 20, 2009
Green, gaming, 3-D and remotes for the iPhone. These were the themes behind products leading the way in CEA's second annual i-stage competition, and it's no surprise why. Consumer interest in eco-friendly products, innovative gaming solutions and a reinvigorated 3-D movie market have all been major tech stories this year. Unlike last year, when the audience favored the endearing presentation of Minoru 3-D webcam over the judges' selection of the accomplished application Boxee, this year's audience agreed with the judges, picking Regen's ReNu, a family of stylish solar-powered products, as the standout winner in the competition. Read the full wrap-up.

CEA SmartBrief | Oct 15, 2009
Today's college students are robust consumers of Information Age technologies. With a single keystroke, they access information that would take hours to locate in a brick-and-mortar library, if it could be found at all. They attend classes, participate in seminars and discussion groups and submit their work remotely, sometimes from across the country and sometimes from halfway around the world. They load their dorm rooms with the latest gadgets and cram their cell phones with the latest apps. The HigherEd TechZone at the 2010 International CES will shine a spotlight on the key issues of high-tech higher education. If you're interested in exhibiting in this area, please contact Ryan Strowger.

This new CEA research study examines teleworking from the employee point of view; identifying who works from home and why. What's more, this research study quantifies the market opportunity this budding practice brings to the CE industry. Through a detailed analysis of the teleworkspace, readers will understand consumer purchase intentions of home office equipment and accessories; defining the present and future market opportunity created by teleworking. The study is free to CEA members and available to nonmembers in the CEA store. Too busy to read the report? Register for the one-hour webcast Oct. 29.
