Intel works toward computing based on silicon photonics
Intel is moving to revolutionize the way computers operate by replacing the electrical wiring inside them with silicon photonics, which rely on fiber optics and light to transfer data. The work -- which Intel says is the foundation for a new server architecture -- is the first step in a process of introducing silicon photonics for interserver communication, which could support speeds of 100 gigabit per second.
