U.S. jobless rate fell to 9.7% in January

The unemployment rate in the U.S. declined from December's 10% to 9.7% in January, driven largely by expansion in temporary-employment services, which added 52,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Overall, nonfarm employment was down 20,000, but a change that small could represent statistical error rather than an actual decline, the government said.
