4. FCC approves DTV waiver for small cablers

The FCC granted smaller cable providers a waiver from delivering broadcast stations' digital feeds immediately after the transition to all-digital TV signals next February. The waiver applies to cable companies with 2,500 or fewer subscribers or with 552 megahertz or less capacity that are not owned by a cable firm with more than 10% of subscribers nationwide. 5. Time Warner Cable plays ball with Big Ten Network

6. Turner research guru: Cable extending lead over broadcast

Since 2004, the last time there was a presidential election and an Olympics, the average viewer watched 14.5 hours of TV on cable per week and 8.3 hours of broadcast. Now, according to Turner Broadcasting System Chief Research Officer Jack Wakshlag, that same average viewer is sitting down to 15.7 hours of cable per week and 6.8 hours of broadcast. 7. Study shows digital-cable penetration outpaces competition

In the last three years, during which time the cable industry saw an onslaught of competition from the satellite and telecom sectors, digital-cable penetration outpaced all others by notching 34% of the market, according to a new study from CTAM. Satellite penetration during the same period increased to just 27%, leaving CTAM President and CEO Char Beales with one overriding observation: "Clearly, cable remains very strong, even in an environment of fierce competition." 8. Comcast grows hi-def network offerings in Chicago

Comcast has announced the addition of 15 high-definition cable networks to its Chicago-area systems, bringing the country's No. 1 provider up to 500 HD options in The Windy City. 10. NBCU reports all-time Olympic viewership record

According to NBCU's analysis of Nielsen data, its cable and broadcast platforms attracted 211 million viewers during that time period, 2 million more than the previous pace-setter, the 1996 Atlanta Games.
